Job Description
Responsibilities include:
- Conduct fundamental research, supply and demand modeling, and analysis in CaISO and MISO power markets using Power Systems Optimizer (PSO)
- Monitor industry regulations and track market rule changes, plant retirements, new renewable and thermal generation builds, transmission upgrades, near- and mid-term demand, and fuel prices
- Provide power price forecasts, key POVs and market drivers, and related congestion impacts
- Short/medium term capacity and energy forecasts (~1-5 year modeling horizon)
- Long-term capacity/retirement forecasts (~10-year modeling horizon)
- Support company strategic investment decisions including business development projects and M&A transactions
- Maintain a detailed knowledge of CAISO and MISO ISO rules including capacity market rules
- Assist Asset Traders with capacity market bidding
- Become a SME for company’s fundamental software tools including Power Systems Optimizer (PSO)
- A bachelor's degree in a business discipline with an advanced degree preferred
- Minimum ~4+ years of professional experience in power fundamental modeling for the North American power markets at a utility, IPP, merchant trading firm, or energy consulting firm
- An understanding of the North American power supply/demand and infrastructure fundamentals
- Experience with production cost modeling
- High-level understanding of transmission analysis
- Model-building skills; experienced with analytical and data manipulation applications
- Experience with one or more markets: CAISO, ERCOT, MISO, NEISO, NYISO, PJM, or SPP
- Experience with CAISO or MISO is desired but not required
- Experience with market software, including PLEXOS, AURORA, DAYZER, GE-MAPS, PROMOD, Power Systems Optimizer (PSO), or similar software packages
- Desire to be a part of a high-performing and analytical team
- Ability to think commercially with strong communication skills
- Experience with at least one programming language generally used in financial models, such as VBA, MATLAB, Python, R, SAS, etc. (highly desired)
