Job Description

A global energy trading firm in Chicago is recruiting for a Power Congestion Trader (CRR Trader or FTR Trader) to join their power trading team. The power congestion trading team manages the congestion risk of their large renewable portfolio with assets in ERCOT, MISO, NYISO, PJM, and SPP.
Key responsibilities:
  • Analyzing power / ISO market data and trends to identify and analyze congestion patterns and forecast prices using weather, demand, generation capacity, and transmission constraints.
  • Monitoring energy supply and demand across different power markets / ISO regions to identify opportunities for buying and selling energy.
  • Identify congestion risk and develop trading strategies.
  • Participate in both the mid-term and long-term auctions for multiple ISO regions to mitigate congestion risk.
  • Collaborating with other energy traders, analysts, and stakeholders to manage portfolio risks and optimize trading positions.
  • Building relationships with internal stakeholders (fundamentals team, asset developers, etc.).
  • Participate in market forums and conferences to stay up-to-date with the latest trends and developments in the energy industry.
  • Maintain compliance with regulatory requirements and internal risk management policies.

Educational and Professional Qualifications:
  • Master’s or Phd in a quantitative field such as electrical engineering, mathematics, physics, or computer science.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of professional experience in a congestion trading or congestion modeling role (in the electricity or power markets) at an energy trading firm, ISO, IPP, utility, or power markets research firm.
  • Knowledge of the power markets, transmission systems, and electricity pricing.
  • Experience with an industry-standard power modeling software tool (DAYZER, UPLAN, PROMOD, GE MAPS, Aurora, PLEXOS).
  • Ability to manage large-scale datasets using Python or R.
  • Familiarity with statistical modeling.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
