Job Description

A wholesale power generation company in Houston is searching for a Market Risk Manager to support its power generation and trading businesses. This hybrid position works closely with traders to communicate market risk and provide risk and PnL reporting around a physical and financial portfolio in conventional power, renewable power, natural gas, and new business activities (data centers). Responsibilities include:
 
  • Manage and develop a team of risk analysts,
  • Monitoring, analyzing and reporting market risk including Value at Risk (VaR), GMaR, Gen Delta, PFE and portfolio stress testing,
  • Producing and analyzing daily position/exposure reporting, P&L reporting and P&L explain for wholesale trading, generation, and structured transactions,
  • Assisting in valuing structured transactions,
  • Enhancing systems and tools in support of a risk control function, including augmentation of ETRM system,
  • Understanding fundamental conventional power, renewable power and gas market events/trends to support and enhance risk analysis,
  • Communicating with traders and internal stakeholders around portfolio views, risks and the impact of fundamental market events to the portfolio,
  • Working on ad hoc projects including new portfolio activity (renewable power portfolio and new Data Centers supporting Cryptocurrency/Bitcoin), and
  • Ensuring risk standards and key control processes are documented and followed by the risk and commercial teams.

Educational and professional requirements include a bachelor's degree in Finance or related field (advanced degree preferred); 7-10+ years' experience in market risk, risk analytics, risk control, risk valuation or middle office in wholesale power generation, wholesale power & gas trading, a power & gas retail energy provider, or an energy risk consulting group; experience with physical and financial derivatives; fundamental knowledge of US power and natural gas markets (experience with ERCOT and/or PJM desired); experience with ETRM systems; supervisory and management skills a plus; and strong technology skills (Excel, VBA, SQL, etc. / Python or R a plus).
